Department of Pediatrics

The Department of Pediatrics established in February 1988 provides comprehensive care to children of all ages, from newborns to adolescents. It is operational as two units in the constituent hospitals, at Attavar and Ambedkar Circle.


Outpatient facility is available on all working days for sick and well children. Health check-up of babies with assessment of growth, development, and nutrition with immunization services are available. The department, in addition to general and special wards for in-patient care has state of the art neonatal and pediatric intensive care units in the constituent hospitals. Facilities offered include non-invasive and invasive ventilation, non-invasive monitoring, surfactant therapy, exchange transfusion, total parenteral nutrition, dialysis, double surface phototherapy, etc. A separate ward has been earmarked for children receiving intensive chemotherapy for cancer. Resuscitation facilities for newborns are available both in the labour ward and theatre. The department has developed sub specialties in neuro-development, oncology, rheumatology, HIV and genetics. The sub specialties are well supported by the departments of pediatric surgery, radiotherapy, ophthalmology, physiotherapy, audiology, and psychology.

Community projects such as rural outreach clinics are conducted every month at 15 remote places of the district. The patients who need hospitalization are issued cards for free treatment and investigation. The department is committed to national health programs such as Acute Flaccid Paralysis surveillance, Pulse Polio Immunization and Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illnesses.

The out-patient department is provided with ‘Vaccine Safe’ with uninterrupted power supply for maintaining the potencies of the vaccines. Electronic weighing scales, infantometer and stadiometer are available for accurate assessment of growth. Nebulisation facilities are available on outpatient basis.

The intensive care units are equipped with central oxygen and suction, ventilators, pulse oxymeters, cardiac monitors, multi-parameter monitors for measuring heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation, volume and syringe infusion pumps for accurate delivery of fluids and drugs. The neonatal intensive care unit in addition is equipped with radiant warmers, open care systems, incubators and double surface phototherapy units. Room-in facilities are available within the intensive care complex for nursing mothers.

Department of Pediatrics Surgery

The department functions in conjunction with department of Pediatrics and Neonatology to provide comprehensive care to the surgical neonate, infant and child. All surgical conditions in the children from the day of birth are managed in this department.

This includes congenital disorders (birth disorders), infective, traumatic and neoplastic conditions, which need surgery such as, cleft lip and palate, anomalies of the ano-rectum, kidney, ureter and bladder, hypospadias, anomalies of the gastro intestinal system etc.

These surgeries include both the conventional open surgery as well as endoscopic (keyhole) surgery's of the chest and abdomen.

Pediatric Hematology Oncology

Pediatric hematology oncology is a highly advanced superspeciality of pediatrics. It involves the care of children with benign and malignant hematological conditions and solid tumours. It also involves the highly sophisticated treatment of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (bone marrow transplant).
